Ongoing Problems Since I Bought It
By Lynn P.
Michigan, Michigan
Review Posted 09/10/2017
I've had this generator for years now and I've had problems with it since Day 1. So many in fact I finally went to Briggs & Stratton directly when I had to have major repair work done to it and it was just outside of warranty. Same problem, repeat expense, and things kept getting worse. They covered some of the cost, but not all of it. I don't blame my local company who sold it to me. This was probably a newer generator model when I bought it several years ago, and they've been responsive. But a dog is is a dog is a dog.
So what's gone wrong? New battery. Problems with the circuitry or board that runs the generator (not a techie here, so bear with me), numerous problems with it being unreliable during power outages--just didn't come on. On and on.
I'm thinking of replacing the generator and getting a new one and I doubt I'll get another B&S unless it's already a proven winner and field tested by numerous customers.
I spent a lot of money on my generator and even more on service calls. What a disappointment.
PS: This has nothing to do with reliability, but instead product design. Who wants to stand around and unscrew numerous bolts to get the top cover off in the middle of winter, or any time of year, when it needs resetting? Can't the product designers figure out an easier way to do that w/o having to remove 4+ bolts?
PPS: This thing is loud. I would think with all the exhaust technology available that B&S could have made it at least a little quieter. I'm always slightly embarrassed during its weekly charging runs.
PPS: OK, one last product design issue. I get a lot of snow where I live. The generator is on the side of the house. The "unseen" side of the house and access isn't too good. So when it snows the snow can cover up the exhaust pipe because it exits the generator fairly close to the ground. I can't always get back there to keep it clear. And you guessed it, it won't run or even run for it's charging run, and it for sure doesn't run when the exhaust isn't clear. Can you move it up so that a basic days worth of snow around here isn't cause for me having to trudge around to the back of the house with a shovel?

A BEAT Briggs!

This must have been made on Monday morning... Upon the first start, one of the counter weights let loose and went through the head... After I got it back as a free dealer rebuild, the voltage regulator had a problem. It is totally unreliable... After many calls to Briggs, they can only say that it must not have been installed correctly. Huh! So, every one else here is also doing something wrong??! Did I forget to mention that I may not be a Briggs installer, but I install larger Onan and MTU Generators professionally... The Briggs is barely worth its weight in SCRAP!

I've had no problem with my unit four 4 years have about 50 hours on it. When i had a service dealer come out, my voltage regulator was bad. He said that this is the only problem with this unit.no one stocks this part. H e had to order. I was charged two service trips plus labor totaled to be $675, thought was A rip off. The part was 129.00 will not repair again cheaper to buy a new one.

SUCKS TOO

I have had this Standby Generator for nearly 6 years. I have spent many cold trips outside in rain and snow storms to reset this generator because it didn't start. From day one it has not been reliable. True to it's name, it is a standby generator, it just stands by our house and does nothing. I had to give up on the dealer service and try another service company but it still acted up after that and now it rolls over and does not start at all. Contacted Briggs and Stratton by email a number of times and it was referred to their Technicians last time but they must be on standby too as they neglected to respond to my issues. I plan to buy a new one and it won't be Briggs and Stratton. I won't even be able to get anything for this one as at present it is dead.

I purchased a Briggs and Stratton in 2009 and have had numerous problems. They are not dependable. I have had to replace 2 voltage regulators and now there is a problem that still exist. The unit tries to start but will not run.

Awesome generator! I haven't seen anything engineered and constructed this good for a long time.
Works perfect, when power goes off automatically throws selected circuits online in about 45 seconds.
Even though it is enclosed, it is still pretty loud, but then they all are. Works great at 8000 feet and runs most everything in my house.
The only thing that I don't like is the weekly exerciser feature cannot be turned off or extended to once a month. Other than that don't hesitate to get one of these!

Wow - compact, yet powerful - and it looks just like a small air conditioner. In fact, my neighbors thought I was installing a second AC! - what a great buy. For essential power needs, this was perfect for us. My wife and I travel quite a bit and two weeks ago we had a power outage that lasted 50 hours while we were away from home. We saved the food in our freezer and Fridge, and the sump pump worked flawlessly with the backup power it supplied.
Installation was really easy too - I highly recommend this automatic little dynamo.
Sincerely,
MB
