Generac Guardian 6245 Reviews & Ratings
Dead in 5 years
By Randy W.

Review Posted 06/30/2016
Bought this new from here in 2011. Had a professional certified electrician install it along with standby transfer case. Had it yearly maintenance by an authorized dealer/service. Year 2016 it failed and the annual service confirm engine is shot. Less than 100hrs total which includes 10hrs/year self check run and no more than 16hrs of continuous operation when I did need it. Called Genarac and they said not under warranty ( I knew that) but their comment that 'well, it is a machine' says it all about their concern for quality and pride. I am getting another system and it isn't this company!

OFF TO A BAD START
By Pat M.
Ogdensburg, New York
Purchased 02/14/2015 |
Review Posted 05/24/2015
The very first disappointment was with the "$50/$50 Protect Your Neighbor REFERRAL REBATE" as it seems GENERAC doesn't like the purchase receipt issued by Electric Generators Direct. A fact that I shared with them was that, that's a problem you have to settle with Generators Direct. (Or as I saw it, their form letter can be viewed as "any excuse for not paying is a good excuse." )

The second disappointment was when I fired up this bad boy just to have it start and then quit - repeatedly - and with an "RPM Sense Fault". Brand New, just out of the box. So I call GENERAC for warranty support as this is day one of a 5 year warranty. The girl that answered said it was probably just a gas supply problem and to purge the line of air and test gas pressure. I told her that this "was not" my first installation and I needed a "certified" technician for a "warranty" call. So she told me she could look up someone for me to call. NOT HAPPY.

So I call the first certified contractor. I call him back when he doesn't return my call and he explains "he was just going to call me." (well of course he was.) He has me gather information for him which I email to him. When he doesn't return my email I text the information to him. He texts back that he's "too busy" to look at the generator. ( Of course he is. Doesn't even have time to return phone calls. )

So I end up calling a certified technician from quite a distance away. Another contractor I actually met once when performing a recall repair. I left a phone message of what the fault code was and that the generator was so new that the warranty registration may not yet be complete. He calls me back the next day to tell me that he's on his way to look at the generator and will call me back when he finds out what is wrong with it. He didn't call me back because of the lengthy road trip BUT when I called him he told me that the "Stepper Switch" must have gotten screwed up in shipping. He repaired the unit and it was up and running. He would file the paperwork but he could not guarantee that Generac would cover it.

Now the sale and the shipping were flawless. There wasn't as much as a tear in the cardboard. So what does it take to upset the "Stepping Switch".
After reading a few threads I've seen where they are problematic - failing 2 to 3 years after service.

I do like generatorsdirect.com but I think I'll start looking at a more reliable generator from a company with better interpersonal management skills.

Manufacturer Response
We apologize for any confusion that has come about regarding the referral rebate. Please note that as long as the proper documentation is submitted along with receipt(s) displaying the purchase date and price of the products purchased, a receipt from EGD should suffice.

Also, please note that we recommend referring to our independent authorized service providers if/when issues are experienced, as these professionals are trained to not only determine the cause of a unit's issues, but to also provide any applicable warranty coverage as well. Unfortunately, we are unable to determine what has caused your unit's issues via online correspondence.

Lastly, if you would like to discuss these issues with us directly, or if you have any additional comments, questions, or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us directly at 888-GENERAC (436-3722). We apologize for any inconvenience that your personal experience may have caused.

Standby Generac Generators
By Stephen S.

My purchase of the Model 6245 Generac Generator is my second purchase from Generac. My use of this generator was intended to be used in conjunction with a solar powered system for my barn. When the Generac dealer was there removing the old Generac Generator, I was informed I had ordered the wrong generator. The Model #6245 is a standby residential generator that is designed and wired to be hooked up to a house using 110AC current. Apparently, the wiring for the controller is different on this generator versus the same generator designed for an off grid system.

The Model #6245 can be used in a manual mode, and that is how I am currently using it. The way it is wired currently, it is a backup to my solar system.

I asked the dealer who installed the generator to help me find a solution that would enable the model generator I purchased (#6245) to function in my off grid system. They were not interested in solving this problem. I wrote to Generac to see if I could get some assistance even if what I did voided the warranty. They were no help either.

The use of a generator in an off grid solar powered system is to provide backup power when the voltage on the batteries drops to 11.5 volts. There is an automatic switch that will open up and turn on the generator which will provide the electric power needed. At the same time, it will be charging the batteries. When the batteries get to the desired voltage, the inverter charge controller will turn off the generator, and revert back to battery power.

The Generac Generator works great. My experience is when you have problems with their products, I have not been impressed with their support. Granted, the problem is my fault because I did not know to order an off grid generator. My bad. Now just want to find a way to make it work.

Great Price, Good Product, & some advice...
By Richard M.

The truck came at a break in the Big Storm we were having in Northern California. I tarped the whole crate until the weather cleared. It rained for ten days. I removed the old Gen. and set the new one.

The 100A Transfer Switch was under the deck and so is the new one, The existing six small wires were perfect for the job.
I mislabeled a wire in the Transfer Switch as it was dark under there, a Black and a Brown. I had discovered that mistake after talking on the phone with the local Generac Dealer Gale @ NCRE.

It was the O & T wires I had crossed that blew the protective fuse in the T.S. on the load side and thus the the yellow led and warning on screen," No A.C. Charger".

Lesson: " Don't work in the dark!"

Power if you need it
By Ron M.
Columbiaville, Michigan
Review Posted 11/30/2014
After years of frequent power outages, and last Christmas' ice storm leaving us with no power for eight days and a few after, I'm tired of getting, pouring ,and smelling of gas. I finally said "enough."

I had it installed, it starts each week, and I hope I never have to use it, but I'll have power if I need it. Get a good installer.

Don't Even Think About Purchasing This Generac Generator-8kw
By Stephan C.
Port Washington, New York

Review Posted 01/01/2014
From the moment we started it, shut off after 10 minutes due to low oil pressure. Called Generac certified technician and said we needed a new motor! Really?!?!?! How about a new generator altogether!!! Would you buy a new car and being told after 3 weeks that it needs a new motor? I don't think so. Now, we are stuck with this defective generator.

I am going further with is. Best of all, after doing online research, I have read more complaints and problems with other consumers with this particular Generac model...8kw. I have concluded that this is a manufacture's defect and Generac needs to do more about this or take them off the shelves. You do the research yourself and you will see what I am talking about. Shame on Generac. I'm sure you know this, Generac , and it is very disgusting!

Expert Response
The good thing is that Generac does stand by their products. A technician that immediately states the motor is bad should not be the guy checking the unit. A recommendation would be to contact a different certified Generac technician for a second opinion.

Buying Direct Saved Me A Lot
By Gilbert N.

I am delighted I chose to buy a unit from Elec. Gen Direct- easy to get info to gain info on what I needed to order-very quick shipping time--4 days from the time I picked up the phone to place the order until the unit was setting on my property in Sapphire, NC. Buying direct saved me a lot of money and time in getting my generator installed and running in 7 days from the first time I called Elec. Gen. Direct. I was a contractor and gave the same kind of service and giving good service & price beats a lot of advertising you have to pay for.
