Generac has come out with a new 7172 10kW standby generator. .
The Evolution series digital controller allows for some really neat accessories. Wireless monitors are offered in 3 styles: basic status alerts, advanced wireless monitoring, or the mobile link system, which allows you to review the generators' status via any cellular device.
The 7172 has an aluminum enclosure with RhinoCoat finish that can sustain winds up to 150 mph. If you live in an area that gets pummeled with salt water, the good news is you now have a lower kW option with the aluminum enclosure.

My Second Generac In About 16 Yrs

Review Posted 02/01/2025
I've been very impressed with Generac, my current 8k Generac is still running strong after 16yrs, we have had some really long power outages over the years that have a last 1 to almost two weeks straight at a time, we never shut it down even once during those outages the only problems we have had over the years were the following---Nexus controller replaced under warranty, engine head gasket replace by me ( if i would have retorqued it, it probably would have never went bad) and I believe only 3 batteries and regular oil changes and air filters, and I'm hoping my new 10k will do even better! "Electric Generators Direct" are the best in my opinion, I bought the previously mentioned 8K from them 16yrs ago also with what i remembered as unbelievably fast and perfect delivery and best price and this time they did it even quicker, I received everything the next day LTL trucking with lift gate in perfect condition!!! believe it or not we are just keeping this "new 10k" one "On stock" for the day that the 8k finally dies, we are not "preppers" but we are worried with tariffs and other things going on in the world we better be get one before the prices go thru the roof! THANK YOU "ELECTRIC GENERATORS DIRECT" !!!!

Installation was beautiful, supported by good product documentation. When going through the startup procedure, I downloaded the app, and found that it wouldn't accept the serial number of the machine. No big deal, I thought, I'll just go without the remote monitoring function on my phone until I get that sorted... Nope! You can't set the generator to automatically start with power failure until you register it and receive an activation code FOR THE GENERATOR from Generac. After waiting for an hour on hold, the support staff determined that it was a problem in their system with this serial number. She was able to provide me with an activation code, and allow the generator to auto start. I still can't access the remote monitoring app, because apparently that part didn't get fixed.
Very disappointing: you can't even use the intended function of this generator (auto start on power failure) without online/phone activation and giving them your home address and phone number. I won't buy anything from Generac again because of that required activation.

WiFi features not a plus

So this was a necessity replacement for our home location and power outages that we experience. Speaking to multiply reps didn't give full information on the wifi factors that any outage beyond 3 hrs requires reconnecting generator to wifi for app features and operation, let alone you need an app download to register the system. In this day and age the technology adapted to a generator that supply's house power holds no weight simply frustration when you live remotely and experience consistent power outages throughout the year. Now to tell me I have to reconnect after any outage longer than three hours?, I'm sorry but that's simply a joke. Redesign the system if this is the selling point of a generator.

The wifi is not required for operation of the generator, it's simply for the convenience of monitoring the system.

16 Seconds!
By Paul S

Review Posted 05/03/2023
First, let me say that due to potential flooding issues, this unit was mounted on a trailer along with a 120 gallon propane tank, and connected to the home using NEMA rated twist lock connectors. The transfer switch was permanently mounted on the structure, above the flood level. We now have a portable 10,000 watt propane powered power supply!
But, most important- When we shut down utility power, this unit restored power in 16 seconds!
The instant power was lost, the screen on the Gennie woke up, and counted 5 seconds. when 5 seconds of no power elapsed, it auto started, then ran 10 more seconds, then BOOM, it hit the transfer switch, power was back on like nothing ever happened!
Amazing.
The ONLY complaint i had was the set up, the Required WI FI did not work (we are out in the country!) and it will not run until you get "The Code" from Generac. We had to call in and get it. Not a big deal, but was not expecting that issue.

Not The Quality I Was Expecting
By Ken L

Review Posted 09/30/2022
I purchased this generator to replace the same size Guardian that was installed in 2009 and had a catastrophic engine failure with only 440 hours. This unit was received and installed in Sep. 2021. I was oustide when the unit was running around Jan. of this year and something didn't sound right, kind of like bearing noise. After contacting several Generac authorized service dealers in my area I finally got one to come out and take a look. I found that the service centers shy away when you say it's under warranty.
The service guy showed up around the last week of Feb. to take a look. He did agree that it didn't sound right and said it sounded like the bearing was bad on the armature of the generator. He said it could take up to 45 days to receive the bearing and would let me know when it came in to schedule an appointment. After several months and not hearing back I called the service company and coincidentally was told the bearing just arrived. The service company came back on July 13th to replace the bearing.
After disassembly I was told they couldn't remove the bearing and would have to take it back to there shop to press it off and the new one back on. After not hearing back for several weeks I called the shop to inquire about the repair and coincidentally again was told it was finished. The service company arrived on Aug. 10th with the new bearing installed and reassembled the unit. They started the unit up and it sounded terrible and they shut it back down. After the 3 techs finished consulting I was told that they would have to contact Generac about the problem. I got the runaround for several weeks saying they were waiting for a call from Generac or that Generac required measurements that they would have to return and get. Finally I was told that Generac was going to send a whole new armature assembly to replace the old one which was over 2 weeks ago.
The bottom line is that it looks like I received a generator with a defect and have been trying to get it repaired under warranty. So far the generator has been offline for 2-1/2 months with no repair date in site. I have a lost confidence in the quality of this generator and total loss of confidence in getting warranty repair work done in a timely manner.

GOOD TO GO

This is a great model. Of the ones I've been a part of, they've been phenomenal. They are the smallest of the two cylinder Generac Auto-Standby generators in the Residential Class. Two cylinders perform better with heavier loads. The smaller generator size means less fuel required to provide service. So, as long as it's sized correctly it'll do the job for less.
I believe only one of the 10 kw generators has an alarm registered in the alarm history - and that was prior to purchase, which means it most likely occurred at the factory. The others that I'm associated with have zero alarms in their alarm history going back close to ten years. An impressive history of reliability.
The owners of these units haven't had a bad thing to say about their decision to go with this 10 kw model.
They use to be packaged with a Whole House Transfer Switch but I haven't seen that in a while. To purchase the generator and the transfer switch separately drives the cost up to where the 14 kw unit looks more attractive. It may be a decision to more closely provide the coverage without disappointment, I'm not certain of the reason.
