SureStart For Home AC
By Jeff W

Purchased 04/26/2023 |
Review Posted 05/18/2023
Bought this unit as a replacement for a similar product from Emerson (which failed after 10 years). Had an HVAC technician install it for me. Everything went smoothly, and it seems to be working fine so far. It doesn't come with wires, but apparently neither did the Emerson version, so my technician just used the existing wires from the previous installation. The price seems very reasonable.

I built a new house with 3 (5 ton brand new units.) When the unit came on, the lights flicker in the whole house. After checking, the starting current was 101 amps. After installing the Sure Start, problem solved.

Hyper Engineering Sure Start

On Feb 22,2021 I ordered the sure start. Still have the original email form gentek and order number details for that date. In November 2022 the device failed. I ordered another from Elec Gen Direct. The compressor would start on the 4 ton unit but the startup was very erratic. Since the item was no longer in warranty after one year, I opened it up and discovered the large capacitor had no capacitance. At 280 for the sure start, it is expensive for a year and a half of service. I recently ordered the failed capacitor and replaced in the bad unit and it now working properly with smooth start on startup. I could not get the exact rating on capacitor since European made but close enough. I ordered the replacement but will have to see how long it lasts. It is sized correctly for the 4 ton unit and is the same one originally ordered back in Feb 2021.

SureStart From HyperEngineering Is A Great Product
By Thad S.

Review Posted 10/17/2022
I have used three of these now to lower the inrush amp draw on two different air conditioning units. One failed after about two years of use due to an insect that managed to crawl inside and shorted the enclosed capacitor. (Apparently doubles as an insect killer.) Good support from the company, easy to look up which unit you need based on a flow chart and the details of your AC, and unexpectedly... at least on one of the ACs the unit is much quieter.
Needed to lower the inrush to support a possible excess current demand issue on batteries as part of a solar system install if the grid wasn't available.
Wiring it into the AC takes some knowledge and the ability to follow wiring diagrams inside the AC. Comfort ability with working on electronics is necessary.
