Powermate
Manufacturer Review

This generator is powered by a Honda GX390 engine with auto engine shut off for low oil. The 8 gallon metal fuel tank with easy to read fuel gauge provides 12.4 hours of run time at 50% load. The AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulator) keeps equipment protected from voltage surges. 10 inch flat-free wheels make the unit easy to transport. There are two 5-20R 20 Amp Duplexes and one L14-30R 30 Amp Twistlock on the unit. Oil is included. There is a 3 year warranty on both the engine and the generator.

Our apologies you're not happy with your generator. It is clearly stated in the spec tab that this generator does not have auto idle control. This generator is classified as a emergency generator. The only portables that typically have the auto-idle feature are professional grade job site generators.

New Generator

The transaction with EGD was absolutely seamless. Excellent communications with me from EGD and the local delivery company. The unit arrived when expected. The driver unloaded and helped me get it on my hand truck.

The unit started fairly easily. One of the reasons I purchased the Generator with a Honda Engine is that i have had a Honda Snowblower for 10 years and it has always started easily. All I have had to do is use fuel stabilizer and run the carburetor dry at the end of each season.

The one point i missed is that the generator has a larger engine than my snowblower. The manual starting effort for the generator is somewhat greater than for the snowblower. Some purchasers may wish to consider an electric starting model for that reason.

Bad Buy

With just 197 hours, and during the 'SANDY' storm, it blew a rod and destroyed itself. I had carefully followed all maintenance procedures, yet I just put a rode thru the block. I gave it to one of the utility workers who was trying to repair our destroyed power infrastructure.

My Generator!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gotta hand it to you guys, Thanks for the great service. Everything went great for this transaction from the price to selection all the way to the delivery guy. The generator came with everything I needed excluding gas. The Honda motor purrs like a kitten and I think my grandma could start it. My buddies came over and drank a few beers checking it out and I was "The MAN". I will definitely recommend you to my friends and I'm so glad I didn't buy that crap at Home Desperate. Thanks gain

Generator Issue Resolved
By Dennis S.
Robbinsville, New Jersey
Purchased 11/02/2012 |
Review Posted 12/10/2012
It took a little time but the generator I received was defective, so Powermate shipped me another one from their warehouse. This one handles the load and seems to work fine.

Even with the issue I would still get this unit because of the quiet Honda Motor. This unit replaced an old Coleman/Powermate that was about 12-15yrs old; and this one is a pleasure to run compared to the motor on the old one.

This generator started for me on the 1st pull and only has a choke- there are no other things to mess with.

Don't forget to turn generator off using the gas line and let fuel run out if you're going to store for a long time.

Would Be A Good Unit If It Ran Smooth
By Dennis S.
Robbinsville, New Jersey

Review Posted 11/15/2012
I received the generator yesterday and went though the procedures to get it ready and it started right up normally. The problem is that when it is connected to a load of more than a couple of light bulbs the engine goes from smooth to RPMS going crazy until you pull back on the choke 1/2 way then things straighten out. Then a few moments later the choke readjusts then RPMS go crazy again.

I called Powermate and the said to take to a local dealer, the closest Powermate listed I called and they were not happy and don't work on those anymore. So then I called Powermate back and they found a person who works on the engines locally. I dropped it off there today and said it will be at least a week before it is done because they are really busy.

I am not too happy about it but don't know what else to do. I am probably going to get stuck with the bill unless it is a warranty part. They think it could be a simple clean out the lines to the carburetor. If the generator would just take the load and run normal it would be a great unit. I am glad this was not last week when power was out and expecting a generator that would run. If it is just a simple clog I'll adjust the review, the unit has potential, maybe I just got a bum unit.

You did exactly the right thing- your unit is covered by a Factory Warranty from Powermate. They went through reorganization some time ago, and are currently a viable and active company. As long as the problem is caused by a defect in materials or workmanship it will be covered by the warranty.

Perfect

Like others who commented, I shopped around a lot and even secured several estimates for permanatly installed backup natural gas generators. In the end, I decided to go with a portable generator but wouldn't settle for anything other than a Honda engine.

The generator arrived on the exact day I was told it would arrive, the driver was courteous, putting it together was a breeze, and of course it started on the first pull. Now I just need a storm to test it out.

BTW - Compared to other generators, I think this one is relatively quiet.

Just what I hoped

Received the generator last week. The only assembly I had to do were the handles and wheels. Very simple.

I added the oil that came with the machine. The placement of the hole to pour the oil in could be better designed. It was low to the ground and required a funnel to avoid spilling any on the ground.

Other than that one complaint, the machine started right up on first pull. Very easy- which is why I went with this machine and the Honda engine. It runs a little louder than I expected but as it is just for emergency purposes, not a big factor. I haven't used it outside of the first start-up.

I just received the transfer switch which will be installed to make better use of generator in the event of a power outage.
