Reliance Controls EGD-Q510KIT Reviews & Ratings
Excellent, highly recommended quality kit
By LuckyTonyB

Review Posted 06/07/2024
Hi, installed this kit in my daughter's home, took a full day because the power inlet box and the electrical panel are at opposite ends of the home. All three components are well made and heavy duty. Wiring the transfer switch to the electrical panel was straight forward, instructions are clear, wires from transfer switch long enough to reach ground/neutral bars, circuit breakers and the wires were clearly labeled. Safely wired one circuit at a time so didn't shut off power to the home. Would highly recommend this kit.
Two issues to consider, wire whip is pre-installed through the bottom center of the transfer switch box and the included flexible conduit would not reach the electrical panel, which is directly above it. 1" flexible conduit very hard to find in my area, the electrical supply house insisted on a 25 foot minimum. I decided to run the wiring whip through the side of the transfer switch box, which shorten the distance to the electrical panel and it all came together, so consider the transfer switch box placement, it has to be quite close to the electrical panel. Supplies needed, mounting screws of course, a fitting for the receptacle box, wire nuts, I used compression lugs for the #6awg wiring connection, electrical tape and labels for the transfer circuits. All in all I'm very happy with the quality components in this kit and the ease of installation.

Poorly Spot-Welded Terminal
By Tom S.

Review Posted 04/13/2021
I tried to install the ground wire to the poorly spot-welded terminal located on the transfer box's lower mid-portion. I pushed on the bolt to loosen, and it snapped. This is a major safety hazard!

I've yet to have this transfer switch kit installed, I'm not an electrician, but I'm pleased with the quality of the components. No other store, on-line or off, had these components in kit form and it was a breath of fresh air when I first came to the Electric Generators Direct website, read the helpful information provided by experts to help me decide exactly what I needed and found it all in kit form and at a great price. I'll try to update y'all when the kit is installed.

Transfer Switch Works Well!

Installed as instructed, works well. Standard breaker design allowed me to configure to my needs by buying some different sized breakers to replace some of those that came with it.
Only gripe is the external power receptacle which is cramped, particularly due to the way the external cover is shaped.

Purchased the 3-Piece Package. Had the manual transfer switch, the out side plug box and the 25 foot out side cord (6-3) from the generator to the out side box.
All I had to do was to purchase the inside wire from the out side box from within my basement and run over to the manual transfer box. I also purchased (6-3) wire at Home Depot. Had them cur me a 35 foot piece. This thick wire is hard to work with, but just took my time and all went very easy. Mounting the outside box was easy as well as mounting the manual breaker box inside my house. The longest part was connecting the 10 breaker sets of wires into my existing main breaker panel. Was not hard to do, just took some time. Have to identify each set of wires and connect them to the breaker in the main panel.
After that, I fired up the generator, plugged in the 25 foot cord from the generator and then into the out side box. Took some doing to get the cord plugged into the outside box, but did finally get it in.Then went into the basement and turned off the main panel and went to the new manual box and put the 10 breakers from Line to Gen and checked the house out, all 10 breakers were working in the house. Even my Central A/C was working.
PS: I did purchase a 10KW Generator with a running watts of 8KW. If you want to run your Central A/C, get the 10KW Unit. Overall, very happy with the 3-Piece Package. Highly recommend it!

All equipment was delivered in a timely manner and very simple install.
Other than one piece missing from the power inlet receptacle which I had in my shop it was a great experience.

Easily customized

Bought this to go with a 7kW portable generator. Easy to install. The main feature that is most helpful is that my breaker needs did not match the default configuration as shipped.
Since this unit uses standard breakers, it was trivial to split the 30 amp and 20 amp 240 volt circuits to four independent 20 amp circuits by removing the connecting bars on the two 240 volt source selector switches (unscrew them from the side of each switch.) Then replace the 240 breakers with four 20 amp 120 breakers. Also replaced one of the 15 amp breakers with a 20 amp. Now it matches the circuits in my breaker box for the circuits I have on the generator.
As somebody else mentioned, this 50 amp transfer switch uses #10 wires from the generator tie in to the breaker bus bars. I replaced them with about 18 inch long #6 wires. I am sure Reliance would not sell it with #10 wires if it was not safe, but just felt more comfortable with #6 all the way from the generator to the breaker bus in this unit. (The cord with this kit is #6 wire also.)
