Florida Residents Scrambling to Secure Backup Generators

ROMEOVILLE, IL (June 01, 2005) - While June 1 marks the official start of hurricane season, the race to secure an emergency generator is already underway and rounding the first turn.

Hurricane Isabel in 2003According to Jon Hoch, founder of Electric Generators Direct.com, an online emergency generator superstore, Florida residents aren't waiting for a tropical depression to develop before purchasing a backup generator.

The Romeoville, Ill.-based e-tailer is already experiencing unseasonably strong demand for portable and standby generators. And the season is just starting.

Hoch is forecasting a very tight supply of generators this hurricane season. Why? Manufacturers haven't had enough time to catch up with last year's devastating hurricanes and ice storms.

Generator manufacturers were building backorders as late as March and April. Now, with Florida residents buying up generators in record numbers in May, manufacturers had just a month or two to build significant inventory.

According to Hoch, many popular generators are already on backorder. "If you wait for the first hurricane to develop before ordering, there's a good chance that you'll be in the dark when it hits."
