This thing is a beast and real work horse. It really roars! Excellent product made right here is the USA. The only down fall is that it’s noisy, but that’s to be expected of something of this size and power. Excellent craftsmanship and serviceable unit, built to last! I’d buy it again.

My house has a heat pump (15 ton unit). Does that fall under the same guidelines that the Geo-Thermal unit does or will this generator run my heat pump as well as a few lights and some appliances ie: fridge? Thanks in advance!

Thanks for your inquiry.

In regards to your question, proper sizing of the generator is crucial to the success of any generator installation and requires a good working knowledge of electricity and its characteristics, as well as the varying requirements of the electrical equipment comprising the load.

A certified electrician needs to be consulted for proper sizing and installation of any generator.

When analyzing the electrical load, consult the manufacturer’s nameplate on each major appliance or piece of equipment to determine its starting requirements in terms of amps and voltage which can be calculated to watts using Ohms Law (Amps x Volts = Watts).

When choosing the generator output select a rating that is approximately 20 to 25% higher than the peak load (for example, if the load is about 8 kilowatts, select a 10 kW generator).

A higher rated generator will operate comfortably at approximately 80% of its full capacity and will provide a margin of flexibility if the load increases in the future.

Note: Applications that are commercial, all-electric homes, have heat pump systems or geothermal systems require special installation procedures and a certified electrician "must" be contacted to evaluate and install these types of systems. Typically portable generators will NOT be able to run a heat pump, A/C or Geo-Thermal unit.

Answer

Unfortunately when you have Heat Pump, Geo-Thermal or All-Electric homes there are special requirements for generators due to the extremely large amount of starting amperage required to run these systems.

With you having a Geo-Thermal system it is recommended that you contact a certified electrician to have them do wattage calculations to verify the specific needs you have to power your Geo-Thermal system.

Typically portable generators and these types of systems do not work due to the large starting requirements. An emergency generator has 1 very large outlet but it does have restrictions because of the maximum amperage you can run through it.

The Winco WL18000VE generator has a 60A outlet as its main outlet which you would connect to the manual transfer system and the maximum wattage a 60A outlet, cord, power inlet box or switch can handle is 14400 watts which is really not enough to power any type of Geo-Thermal system.

With that said, your starting point should be an electrician and then once you see exactly what is required you can then make a decision on what generator you could go with.
