I’m a repeat purchaser of the 12RES Kohler generator. I previously had one as automatic backup at a home I owned, and this is my second purchase of the same model. This one is being used slightly differently as backup to an off-grid solar system at my farm.
I installed it myself, and am using an IoT switch, connected to the 2-wire terminals, to start it whenever we have enough rainy days in-a-row to run down the batteries. It carries a 10kW battery-charging load without any difficulty.
Easy to service, durable, and reliable Kohler quality. This is my third Kohler generator (I have a review of the 24RCL on this site, also purchased here), and I would not hesitate to buy another.

I have had experience with other products of this type. This Kohler 12RES utilizes a Kohler engine with a reliable operating history. The power output is very clean, as measured with an oscilloscope, and the metal case is well constructed and finished. This is a quality unit in this price range. The extra few hundred dollars to purchase is well spent.

Right now it has been in service two weeks and the service guy is here to chase down an under voltage issue. It starts and immediately shuts itself down.
