FAQ
How Long Can a Portable Generator Run Continuously?
A portable generator will continue running as long as it has access to fuel. Tri-fuel portable generators connected to a natural gas line and propane generators connected to a large external tank will have the longest runtimes. We do not advise running a portable generator for more than 15-18 hours, however, as it may start needing maintenance. For longer-term backup power, consider a home standby generator.
What Size Portable Generator Do I Need?
To size your generator, determine what you plan to power with it. List out those items and the approximate amount of wattage they require (you can find this in the owner's manual or on the appliance itself). Next, determine the "worst-case" scenario for how many of these appliances you might ever need to run simultaneously. Add up the wattages of those appliances and find a generator that can meet or slightly exceed that minimum requirement. We have a portable generator sizing calculator that will do everything for you.
Can a Portable Generator Run in the Rain?
You need a properly-sized weather-proof generator cover to safely run a portable generator in the rain. These special generator canopies can handle winds up to 70 mph, precipitation up to 12 inches per hour, and 55 pounds of snow.
